Mourning after the Massacre

Creator: Desta Menelik

Date: 8XX A.F.

Materials and tools: Oil paint on canvas. Hog bristle paintbrush, palette knife.

Description: Depiction of the burial of those lost at the Massacre of Wollo Pass, specifically the burial of the Host Aweke’s aunt, Hami. Accompaniment to Flight of the Magi and Massacre at Wollo Pass. The following passages from Creation of Miya 2 can be found describing this scene:

24 The following morning, after the last of Mengistu’s bandits had fled, the surviving Magi were left to pick up the remains.

25 Lacking strength in numbers, and fearing another attack, the Magi quickly gathered their dead into a deep ditch in the ground.

26 The remaining priest, Yakob, performed the final prayer, to send their dead to the Place Beyond where the Goddess resided. 27 The Maji cried out for the Goddess to rescue them from persecution.

28 The Goddess, hearing their prayers, looked on her people and grew anguished at their suffering.

Additional notes: All items depicted in the decorative borders can be found in the gallery “Memento Mori: Rememberance of the Lost Ones”, on Floor 4.
